RV Winter Fun for Kids

RV Winter Fun for Kids

The winter season doesn’t have to mean cabin fever for you, your children, or grandchildren. With a bit of planning, your RV can become a mobile winter wonderland, filled with endless opportunities for adventure and fun. Here are some ideas to help you have winter fun with your kids while RV living.

Embrace the Snow

Snow is often a dreaded part of winter, yet it doesn’t have to be! Here are some ideas to help you and your family have fun when the snow covers your landscape:

  • Build a Snow Fortress and Snowmen: Unleash your inner child and construct an epic snow fortress, build a friendly snowman family, lay in the snow and make snow angels, or have a snowball fight (remember to be mindful of your surroundings).
  • Go Sledding: Find a local hill and enjoy the exhilarating rush of sledding down snowy slopes.
  • Help Others: Get a shovel and clear some paths and driveways. Community service activities help teach children valuable life lessons. This could even be a great opportunity for older kids to earn some money at the RV Park.
  • Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing, and Snowmobiling: These activities require additional equipment, which you may be able to rent in your area. Check with local outdoor recreation stores or campgrounds for rental options.

A great resource for families is 1000 Hours Outside. This organization can help motivate the kids to be outside and can provide ideas allowing your family to explore and embrace nature all around you. There’s a mobile app you can choose to use, but my family tends to stick with printing off a free tracker coloring page.

Cozy Up Inside the RV This Winter

Sometimes the weather outside is simply too hazardous to enjoy. In those circumstances, have the kids make hot cocoa with you and enjoy these simple activities.

  • Hot Chocolate and Movie Nights: Cuddle up in your RV with hot chocolate, homemade popcorn, and watch family-friendly movies. Create a cozy atmosphere with blankets and pillows. You could even have a themed movie night! My kids feel extra special when we top the hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles.
  • Board Games and Puzzles: Engage in friendly competition with board games or challenge yourselves with a challenging puzzle. Have a game night tournament or create your own board game.
  • Indoor Camping: Set up a tent in the living area and have a “camp-in” complete with flashlights, glow sticks, and stories told by flashlight.
  • Arts and Crafts: Get creative with winter-themed crafts like making snow globes or decorating gingerbread houses.
  • Reading: If your family loves to read, perhaps have one evening as a special reading night. Put the phones away and read books together. Turn on the fireplace and dim the lights to make it feel cozy. Make a special meal that relates to the book you’re reading.
  • Learn New Skills: Encourage your kids to learn a new skill. Ideas include learning a musical instrument, coding, a new language, knitting or crocheting, leatherwork, wood carving (or Ivory Soap Carving), drawing, leatherwork, and budgeting, just to name a few.
  • Make Meals Together: Allow the kids to help plan a meal each week and allow them to help in the kitchen. It could be as simple as grilled cheese sandwiches, but you will be teaching them an important skill that they’ll need for the rest of their lives.

To help the kids feel that these are special events, designate them on the calendar and let the kids help plan the activity. It’s okay if the activity isn’t picture perfect. The important thing is to make memories together.

Explore Nearby Attractions

Part of the beauty of RV Living is seeing new places. If you’re in an unfamiliar location, research the area. You may be surprised on what is available for your entertainment.

  • Visit a Winter Wonderland: Many cities and towns host winter festivals with ice skating rinks, light displays, and winter markets.
  • Go Ice Skating: Enjoy the graceful glide of ice skating at a local rink or outdoor ice rink.
  • Go Skiing or Snowboarding: If you’re near a ski resort, take advantage of the opportunity to hit the slopes.
  • Plunge into the Hot Springs: I’ve found many hot springs in the western states. Most facilities have a family friendly atmosphere. Relax in the warm water and watch the kids smile as steam rolls above them.

While exploring new areas can be fun, remember that you can enjoy your regular local environment as well, all of these ideas can be RV winter fun for the kids.

Winter RV Living Can be Enjoyed

Make the most of your RV. Curl up by the window and enjoy the winter scenery. Turn on your electric fireplace and stay cozy under the blankets while you read a story to the kids.
